Fake News on Easter Island Sea Level Rise
[last update: 2018/04/25]
The Scare
New York Times: “… many of the remains of that civilization may be erased, the United Nations warns, by the rising sea levels rapidly eroding Easter Island’s coasts.” https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2018/03/14/climate/easter-island-erosion.html

The Data
NOAA provides the following sea level graph for Easter Island: https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/sltrends/sltrends_station.shtml?id=810-003
PSMSL provides the following sea level graph for Easter Island:
http://www.psmsl.org/data/obtaining/stations/1272.php
So the sea level rise over the last ~50 years has been 0.06 +/- 0.95 mm/yr. When the error estimate (+/-0.95) is so much greater than the trend (0.06), it means the trend is not statistically significant from zero. Zero sea level rise at Easter Island.

The Conclusion
The mainstream media are providing fake news, incorrectly reporting that Easter Island is having issues due to rising sea level. They say “the U.N. says” … so it must be true, and they are just reporting it - no fact checking.
According to the Star Tribune, I must be a blockhead. The data show that the Easter Island sea level scare is a hoax.
